9:30 a.m. Welcome and brief introductions


10:30 a.m. Opening panel: What Is Great Science Writing?


11:30 a.m. Break


11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Creating first groups/meeting each other


12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Box lunch at library


1:30 to 3:30 Break into small groups with core instructors for exercises in finding science stories/understanding news values


3:30 to 3:45 Break


3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Robin Lloyd on

pitching science stories


5:30: Meet for carpooling to Durham


6 p.m. Drinks/dinner at Cat Warren's home in Durham (25 miles away—car pooling)




Thursday


9 a.m. Coffee, gathering


9:30 to 10:30: Kevin Begos on writing short, fast, and under pressure


10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Break


10:45 to 12 p.m. Panel discussion on conflicts of interest, ethics, and writing challenges


12 to 1:15 Lunch on your own


Thursday, continued


1:15 to 3:15 p.m. Break into small groups for writing exercises and honing pitches.


3:15 to 3:30 Break


3:30 to 4:30 p.m.: Cat Warren on developing longer pieces, and creating character and plot


4:30 to 4:45 Break


4:45 to 5:30 Panel discussion:Science reporting in a contentious world


5:30 Dinner on your own in small groups


Friday


9 a.m. Coffee and gathering


9:30 to 10:30: Effective writing for science research organizations: Karl Bates, Duke University Director of Research Communications, and Matt Shipman, Research Communications Lead, NC State Communications


10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Break


10:45 to 11:45: Kevin Begos on narrative and investigative science journalism


12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Combination lunch

and small group meetings


2:15 to 6:00 p.m. Instructors meet with individual students


Dinner on your own



Saturday morning


9:00 a.m. Breakfast at Waffle House


10:00 a.m.  Tour of J.C. Raulston Arboretum
